OverView

Wireline Spiders are used during the pilot hole drilling operations mainly during longer crossings of over 300m. The function of the wireline spider is to prevent any slack or stretched wire being forced down around the steering tool and getting in contact with the sharp centraliser blades or blown into the flow sub. Wireline Spiders are located in the box connections and are suitable for both the 10AWG/6mm2 and 8AWG/10 mm2 drill wire. Typically a spider is placed at the end of the first non-mag and every 150 - 250m behind depending on personal preference. The wire is secured with a pack off or gland to prevent it from Slipping down hole, Spiders can be re used and the pack off can be replaced. Should a break in the wire occur it only requires tripping out until the next spider below the break.
